Umbrella – The Community Platform That Helps NJ Seniors Age In Place: In light of COVID we are throwing all of our resources around the biggest need for seniors – access to food. The demand is enormous. Thousands of young, healthy people are stepping up by VOLUNTEERING to help shop on behalf of their older neighbors. But we need to get a call out for many more volunteers ASAP-particularly in Essex where the need is so large. FIND OUT MORE.

Nutley UNICO – Mattia Committee Selects UNICO: The Dr. Virginious D. Mattia Memorial Committee announced that its forty-fourth annual award for distinguished community service has been presented to the Nutley Chapter of UNICO National. The award was established in 1973 to honor the memory and perpetuate the volunteer spirit of Dr. Mattia, who, when president of Hoffmann-LaRoche Inc., died at the age of forty-nine in 1972. Considered by many to be Nutley’s most prestigious, the award has been presented to individuals and organizations representing the broad range of Nutley volunteer activities, some well-known to the public and others who help the people of Nutley in quiet ways. Nutley UNICO is the third largest UNICO chapter in the country. It is very appropriate that its working motto is “Service above Self”. This manifests itself through such activities as more than $32,000 a year in scholarships, donations to various township organizations, including a permanent book fund at the Nutley Library and a Community Service Day each year involving completion of a township beautification project. While the award is being given based on UNICO’s collective community activities, it bears noting that individual members serve on virtually every official board in Nutley, hold some of the more responsible positions in the community and engage in a wide variety of volunteer activities. They are, one and all, dedicated to maintaining Nutley as a citizen friendly, good place to live.

Dr. Gibbia is credited with building a premier educational community for special students in New Jersey that has become a national model. “How often are we given the opportunity to work within our profession and work at something that is our passion?” said Gibbia. “I have been so very fortunate to have lived my passion and to have seen an idea I shared become reality.” Dr. G, as she is fondly referred to, introduced the FISH! Philosophy; “love what you do, do what you love;” transforming school culture and creating a learning environment of warmth, love and fun. Dr. G will continue to stay active in the field, working on special projects for The Phoenix Center such as the transition into Adult Service Programs for upcoming graduates.
