MESSAGES FROM THE CHAMBER
View Member NewsView Congratulations

Don’t forget to keep us up-to-date on all of your anniversaries, open house events, community service activities, awards, help wanted, and business expansions. Have some interesting news, let us know! We’ll forward your news to your fellow Chamber Members. Please send us your photos of recent excursions in and around Nutley and we will post them on Facebook! Great way to help promote our local businesses!

Independent Restaurant Coalition – Independent Restaurant & Bar Grants: A $28.6 billion restaurant and bar grant program will be made available soon. Members of the Independent Restaurant Coalition partnered with members of Congress to craft the legislation. While the Small Business Administration prepares to stand up the program, businesses should take steps to organize the materials necessary to submit an application once it is available. Below is a bit of information about the program, and what businesses can do to prepare for the application. DOWNLOAD APPLICATION.

Nutley School Re-Opening – Students’ Lunch Resources: Nutley Schools have re-opened Monday, March 1st. Although the schools will not be offering food, nor do they want the students congregating after in-school classes have ended for the day, we would like to remind all our eateries to promote family style meals parents can order and pick-up or visit for in-service dining. Any promotional information you might want the Chamber to help promote, please forward in a pdf file to chamber@nutleychamber.com.

Greenutley – Market Health & Safety Procedures: Before you come to the Market, please review the following recommendations and rules: If you are not feeling well even with minor symptoms, please stay home. Please come with the fewest number of people possible and leave pets at home. Remember to bring your masks. At the Market: Patrons must wear masks or other protective face coverings. Patrons enter the Market via one designated entrance on Franklin Avenue. Patrons parking in the rear lot can use the pedestrian walkway along the former Ciccolini Bros. building to the Franklin Avenue entrance. Patrons exit the Market via one designated exit on Franklin Avenue or from the designated exit at the back of the Market into the rear lot. The number and flow of patrons entering the Market will be determined by staff. Patrons must keep a safe distance and complete shopping without lingering. Patrons must abide by Market signage and instructions from staff and vendors. Market layout will maintain a safe distance between vendors. We thank you for your patience and cooperation! This is a challenging time for all of us, but we will get through this together. Questions? Contact Market Manager Meredith Blank at farmersmarket@nutleynj.org or 973-284-4978.

Chamber Chats: The Nutley Chamber of Commerce has continuously interviewed local businesses to gather their feedback and engage residents to keep our members in mind when we will be able to re-socialize in a responsible manner. VIEW ALL OUR VIDEOS.

Umbrella – The Community Platform That Helps NJ Seniors Age In Place: In light of COVID we are throwing all of our resources around the biggest need for seniors – access to food. Delivery services have weeks-long waits (and non-digital seniors can’t access them in the first place). We’ve set up a hotline where any senior in the state can call us to ask for grocery delivery. The demand is enormous. Thousands of young, healthy people are stepping up by VOLUNTEERING to help shop on behalf of their older neighbors. But we need to get a call out for many more volunteers ASAP-particularly in Essex where the need is so large. FIND OUT MORE.

Broadway House For Continuing Care – Meet Our Queen Of Quality: A commitment to high standards has long defined the career of Lois Beatty, Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs at Broadway House for Continuing Care. In fact, during her 22-year tenure at Broadway House, Beatty has earned the nickname “The Queen of Quality.” That moniker took on new importance during the pandemic. Beatty was relentless in her quest to keep patients and staff safe, playing a key role in the low COVID-19 infection rate achieved at Broadway House over the past ten months. At a recent ceremony in December, Beatty was recognized with the Exceptional Leadership During COVID-19 Pandemic Award. Human Resources Director Donnamarie Lynch, PhD, said of Beatty, “Lois takes the quality of the facility very seriously. She seeks out and implements any measures necessary to mitigate exposure to COVID-19 for residents and staff. Her leadership contributed to our facility having favorable outcomes related to COVID-19 over these last ten months.” In addition, Robert Hardrick, activities, was named Employee of the Year. Lynch noted, “During the height of the pandemic, we were significantly short-staffed in the activities department. Robert held down the fort and took the lead. For three months, he made it happen for our residents while training a new employee. Robert has incredible passion and commitment to the mission of Broadway House and its residents.” Five employees were also presented with awards recognizing their dedicated years of service to Broadway House and its residents: Lenore Shamberger-Jackson, nursing, and Angela Moroney-Cymbaluk, finance, 25 years; Gloria Horton, social services, 20 years; Rachel Jaslow, activities/art therapy, 15 years; and Damary Lugo, social services, 10 years.

The Friends Of The Nutley Public Library – Important Message: The Friends of the Nutley Public Library hope that you and your family are staying safe and well during this pandemic. It has changed everyone’s lives, but we are proud that the Nutley Library Staff has bounced back and is ready, willing and able to serve the townspeople of Nutley. The library has regular hours when patrons can do contact-free pick up of books they have ordered and other times when the library is open for patrons to enter and browse. Also, there are many virtual programs available for children, teens, and adults. Check the library website for details and be sure you are included on the Friends email list. The Friends of the Library have been meeting virtually, our big topic being fundraising. We were unable to conduct our April and October Book Sales this year. We missed doing these activities, as we missed seeing all of you. These have been our two biggest yearly fund raisers. We did manage to fund all the summer reading programs, and are sponsoring other virtual programs as well. But, we need YOUR help. Please consider making a donation to the Friends. All of the money we collect goes directly to enhance the library’s offerings, particularly for children. You can make your check to the Friends of the Nutley Public Library and mail [Nutley Public Library, 93 Booth Drive, Nutley, NJ, 07110, attention Friends of the Library] or deliver it to the library. If you prefer, you can log onto the FRIENDS WEBSITE click on the donation button and contribute through PayPal or by credit card. While public funding covers the library’s basic operating expenses, the Friends funding allows the library to offer some really special activities enjoyed by many. Your tax deductible donation will help us continue to sponsor all the wonderful programs and events we in Nutley have come to expect. Your generosity will be appreciated and thank you in advance for your consideration.

Nutley Little Theatre – To Our Friends and Supporters: Like all organizations around the globe, Nutley Little Theatre has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which required us to suspend our 2019-2020 season of productions. As the months pass, our stage remains dark and our scheduled main stage productions are being cancelled. We are still waiting for a substantial amount of money (almost $12000.00) that is owed to us by Brown Paper Tickets. We have learned that a lawsuit has recently been filed against Brown Paper Tickets by the Washington State Attorney General, because they owe organizations over 6 million dollars. The chances of getting that money have become slim. As a result, we are hard at work on several different projects in order to keep our theater alive while preserving the health and safety of our patrons. We ask that you stay in touch through our social media and website to keep posted on upcoming events. Other ways you can help out: Spread the word about our upcoming virtual performances, which can be viewed on our Facebook Page and YouTube Channel. While these performances are free to the public, donations are gratefully accepted. Donate to our Venmo or PayPal @NutleyLittleTheatre. BUY ONLINE an NLT mask from Pretty Handy in Nutley! Masks are $10.00 each. 50% of proceeds benefit Nutley Little Theatre! If you live nearby, they offer free pickup! Shipping is also an option. Include us as a beneficiary of your Amazon Smile dollars. If you have a Facebook account, consider choosing Nutley Little Theatre as the beneficiary for your birthday fundraiser. Check out our GOFUNDME Campaign and donate if you can! Any amount is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Happy Anniversary Eastwick EducationEastwick College and the HoHoKus School – Happy Anniversary Eastwick Education! From Eastwick President: I’m proud to share that July 1, 2020, marks the 35th anniversary of Eastwick Education! In 1985, I bought the HoHoKus Secretarial School, located in Ramsey, and in 1995, purchased a second school, the National Education Center, in Nutley. The following year, we purchased the American Business Academy in Hackensack and nine years later purchased the GTI Welding School which moved to Paterson and became the HoHoKus School of Trade. As you know, the schools in Ramsey, Hackensack, and Nutley all became Eastwick College campuses and before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, our four schools had 2200 students and 375 employees. I personally thank Eastwick Education’s Chairman of the Board, Bob Bocchino, who has provided inspiration and guidance over the years. I also salute the loyal and dedicated personnel at each of our campuses.

The Phoenix Center – Focus On Phoenix Newsletter: Please view our recent “Focus on Phoenix” newsletter. We wanted to share a recap of our recent events and accomplishments with you. We hope this message continues to find you and your family well, safe, and healthy. After almost four months of distance learning, we are swimming in new waters, and we are successfully rolling with the tide! We are seeing parents, families, staff, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and educators all working hard to engage our students in their daily learning. Despite the fact that we are apart from each other, this experience has shown us how collaborative we can be, bringing us together on a whole new level. As a result of distance learning, we are all becoming more creative and flexible in how we deliver education and engage our students. This situation, although challenging, is having a very positive impact on us as educators, and in many cases, on our students as well. CLICK HERE to read the Newsletter.

These are unusual times and we want you to know how thankful we are, for you being part of Starlight and how much we appreciate you. It is important to us that you stay healthy and well. One way to stop the spread of this virus is to stop mingling and to be close to one another. So let’s stop and knock the wind out of this Corona virus as fast as possible. The faster it stops the sooner we can again mingle and be close to one another. We can hardly wait to see you again very very soon. However, for now we will be open for private lessons and practice. Everyone washes their hands before and after their lessons and all will be fine. If you don’t feel well, we ask you not to come to the studio. In the meantime, if you don’t come to us, we come to you! Starlight is planning to sent out video material for you to stay active and keep dancing, even if it’s in your living room. Stay tuned as we are preparing them as you are reading this message. Wishing all the very best, stay active, healthy & dance in your living room!

John Demmer, Town Historian of Nutley – One Of The Most Significant Finds! The Kingslands were one of the preeminent founding settlers of Nutley. Joseph Sr. owned and operated a grist and sawing mill on the third river and soon began interests in paper making. The Kingslands would have three generations involved in paper making and built a business that would eventually be the beginning part of the world famous LaMonte paper company. The documents I have purchased here are the actual transactions where Joseph Kingsland jr and his partner are purchasing a part of the existing paper mill that was on the third river which would lead them to many years of success and fortune. The very large indenture shown lays out the purchase and is signed by Joseph Kingsland Jr, his wife Martha and Kingsland’s business partner Peter Morris. The other document lays out some of the financial terms of the deal and is signed by Joseph Kingsland Sr himself as a witness! These transactions happened over 200 years ago around 1818. There is also a third document which I will talk about later which predates these and shows partial interests in the mill being sold to families prior to the Kingsland involvement. This is a huge find and a major home run for the town. VIEW PHOTOS.
